Recorded as Owan, Owen, Owens, Owin, Howen, and according to the International Genealogical Index - Oen, Oene, Onn, this famous name is most strongly associated with Wales. It is said to derive from the pre 7th century Celtic personal name Ouein, which itself was either from the word ''oen'' meaning a lamb, or the Roman ''eugerius, meaning well-born. Chester-le-Street is a town in County Durham, England. It has a history going back to Roman times when it was called Concangis. The town is located 7 miles south of Newcastle upon Tyne and 8 miles west of Sunderland on the River Wear.
