This name derives from the Welsh "llwyd" meaning "grey", and was originally given as a nickname either to a grey haired person or to one who habitually wore grey garments. This is an example of that sizeable group of early European surnames that were gradually created from the habitual use of nicknames. Throckley is a village, located approximately 11 km west of Newcastle upon Tyne, in North East England. Hadrian''s Wall passes through the village, its course traced by the village''s main road, Hexham Road.

Throckley was a colliery village, being adjacent to Throckley Colliery; although with the decline in the coal-mining industry the village is becoming gentrified, like many of its kind.

One of Throckley''s more notable residents was William Brown, who was a consulting engineer in the 18th century, and part owner of Throckley Colliery at the time, responsible for the construction of many colliery waggonways throughout the North East of England.

Newcastle upon Tyne is a city and metropolitan borough of Tyne and Wear, in North East England. Situated on the north bank of the River Tyne, the city developed in the area that was the location of the Roman settlement called Pons Aelius, though it owes its name to the castle built in 1080, by Robert II, Duke of Normandy, the eldest son of William the Conqueror. The city grew as an important centre for the wool trade and it later became a major coal mining area. When it was created in England in 1984, it consisted of the Westminster Parliament constituencies of Gateshead East, Houghton and Washington, Jarrow, Newcastle-upon-Tyne East, South Shields, Sunderland North, Sunderland South, Tyne Bridge, although this may not have been true for the whole of its existence.
